Working with data
Course overview
This book is a work-in-progress intended to support the course MGMT2605 - Working with Data offered at the Faculty of Management of Dalhousie University. The course introduces this knowledge and skillset through lectures and hands-on labs. Students will learn to use a variety of tools to find, manage, assess, extract value from, and visualize raw data.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Manipulate, assess, analyze, and share raw data of different types (including quantitative data, qualitative data, and GIS data)
- Identify the nature and extent of data needed and collected for given managerial purposes
- Locate, collect, and integrate data of multiple types from multiple sources
- Use data to inform evidence-based decision-making
- Understand the data lifecycle (including collection, management, analysis, and application)
- Demonstrate critical evaluation at various stages of the data lifecycle
- Assess data visualizations and analyses for accuracy, relevance, and objectivity
- Employ a range of data skills to address diverse, real-world scenarios/problems in multiple sectors and disciplines
- Use data ethically and with awareness of the capabilities and limitations of data analysis
